Throughout the classes the week, we’ll be looking at anapana or breath awareness. It’s the first step towards breath adjustment, as ‘without awareness, there is no choice’. So we start here by becoming experts in our breath, notice what we do naturally. We do this by becoming really curious about how natural state and ask our selves little questions like,

’Do I breath in through my mouth or my nose?’

’Where does the air go when I breath in?’

’How does my body feel when I inhale vs exhale?’

’Can I notice a temperature difference between the inhale and exhale?’

’What happens to my breath when…I’m distracted, I open my eyes, I feel uncomfortable?’

We can then take this a step further and apply this awareness to our asanas (poses). When can then ask ourselves,

’What happens to my breath when I’m struggling, when I’m achieving something, when I fall down, when I’m laying down, when I’m doing strength work vs flexibility, when the teacher discusses philosophy? etc.

Finally, we can attempt to apply this off the mat in our every day lives. What happens to my breath when,

  • My kids are fighting
  • I’m stuck in traffic
  • I get praised
  • I’m anxious
  • I’m getting ready for bed

Once we can find awareness of our own breath, then we can start practicing techniques to improve it for even better wellness results.
